“Beholding” is an ancient concept that refers to seeing beyond that which one is simply looking at, or a deeper awareness beyond yet including that which is readily visible. Beholding not only considers the visual but also the transcendent presence of that with which we are interacting. Beholding is an interactive transcendent experience by which we can experience that which we are interacting in a deeply relational manner. Beholding is a way of becoming open and present to the point where we see beyond the mere physicality of what we are beholding, and to, in some manner, interact and experience the presence of that which we are beholding in a transcendent manner. This can change the relationship between the beholder and that which is being beheld, sometimes in profound ways. In Christian Spiritual Direction and Soul Care this is a discipline that allows us to be truly present to God, others, self, and creation in a manner by which we become more attuned to God’s movement and voice that draws us into Love, thus interpersonal states of deeper compassion, empathy, and connection with all in which we come into contact.
And he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God!" ESV John 1:36
