Hi Everyone, I pray blessings upon you, that you are experiencing the presence of God in every moment of your days. Now is a good time to be still and let God speak in your heart.
It is my firm belief that competent spiritual direction/companioning/friendship is a key component to everyone’s spiritual journey. This is especially true for those who lead busy, distracted lives, yet feel a deep desire to stop and to hear God’s voice, to feel and know God’s presence, in their lives. One of the experiences we employ in our Introduction to Spiritual Direction1 seminar is a meditation by which we ask the Lord to open us up to the reality, to give us an awareness, of the sacred space that is all around us, if only we would stop and take time to allow God to speak the Truth and Beauty of the sacred that surrounds us our experience of God’s presence would explode. This week I would like to share this meditation for your consideration.
Sensing the Sacred
1. Go to a quiet place.
2. Do a body scan by slowly tightening and releasing each muscle in your body. Begin with your feet and work your way up, muscle by muscle, to your face.
3. Feel your body at rest.
4. Become aware of your breathing and the beat of your heart, which speaks of your aliveness here and now.
5. Allow any thoughts you may have to simply come and go.
Slowly read Psalm 46:10a. Just allow God’s Word to flow, without resistance, into your mind, body and soul.
“Be still and know that I am God” Psalm 46:10a
Allow yourself to simply rest in the knowledge that Almighty God is present with you, here and now.
Now slowly read Psalm 139:23. Again, simply allow God’s Word to flow, without resistance, into your mind, body and soul.
Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my thoughts. 24 See if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. NRS Psalm 139:23
Surrender your heart to the Lord for purification and guidance. You may want to say, “Lord, please purify my heart”, several times.
When you are ready, then slowly read Psalm 143:10. Allow God’s Word to flow, without resistance, into your mind, body and soul.
Teach me to do your will, for you are my God. Let your good spirit lead me on a level path. NRS Psalm 143:10
Ask the Lord to make you teachable. Proclaim that God is your God. Be led by the good Spirit. Feel God’s goodness; be open to God’s wisdom. You may want to briefly journal anything you sense may be coming from God during this time.
As you emerge from the silence slowly read John 10:3-4. Remember to simply allow God’s Word to flow, without resistance, into your mind, body and soul.
3The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. NRS John 10:3-4
Say, “Lord, speak to me. Open my ears to know your voice and to follow you always.” Listen to God’s voice speak to you. Do not assume you know exactly how God will speak, just be open as you listen with all your senses and all your heart.
Again, emerging from the silence this time slowly read Matthew 5:8. Enjoy God’s Word to flowing, without resistance, into your mind, body and soul.
"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. NRS Matthew 5:8
Repeat the following prayer several times. “Dear Lord, purify my heart that we may see you.”
Slowly read Matthew 28:20. Feel God’s Word flowing, without resistance, into your mind, body and soul.
and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age." NRS Matthew 28:20
Feel and meditate on the deep desire that God has placed in your heart to be obedient to Christ’s divine commandments. Remember that he is always with you, to the end of the age. This is not a time to necessary think about these things as much as a opportunity to feel them deep within you.
24"I ask not only on behalf of these, but also on behalf of those who will believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 The glory that you have given me I have given them, so that they may be one, as we are one, 23 I in them and you in me, that they may become completely one, so that the world may know that you have sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. 24 Father, I desire that those also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory, which you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world. NRS John 17:20-24
Pray, “Lord Jesus, make me one with You that I may be completely one with Your body, that the world will know that you have sent us.” Feel yourself uniting with and in Christ, becoming one with the body of Christ.
Slowly read John 17:20-24. Experience God’s Word to flowing, without resistance, into your mind, body and soul.
When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. NRS John 16:13
Submit yourself; body, mind and soul to the guidance of the Spirit of truth. You may want to take a physical action such going to your knees, raising your hands, or laying facedown before God, as a sign of full surrender.
