A Weekly publication of The Awakening Institute for Spiritual Formation, Spiritual Direction, and Soul Care.
Hi Everyone, I pray blessings upon you, that you are experiencing the presence of God in every moment of your days. Now is a good time to be still and let God speak in your heart.
This coming Spring “The Awakening Institute” will be offering a four week experience titled “Discerning God’s Will in the Midst of Life’s Tough Decisions.”1 The question that seems to be on so many minds is; “How can I know God’s will in my life? Progress in this discipline must flow from a solid foundation. Discernment is like sending a rocket to the moon, it must begin with the correct coordinates , otherwise the slightest deviation will leave us far from our projected destination, which is to align our lives with God’s will as we listen to God’s guiding voice speak into our lives. In short we do our best to be ready to listen and be obedient to Jesus Christ who says “Follow me.”
The Foundational Predisposition for Discerning God’s Will for Our Lives
This begins with a deep desire and a heart of surrender that asks the Lord to take that which we have become conformed and transform us into those who can have an awareness of God’s perfect will. In this respect, God’s word, as recorded by the Apostle Paul in his letter to the Romans, is helpful.
I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God-- what is good and acceptable and perfect.
NRS Romans 12:1-2
The following is an outline to preparation ourselves to seek God’s will in our life decisions.
Openness: We must approach the question for discernment with an open mind and an open heart that says’, “Lord I trust you.”
Generosity: We place no conditions on how God might guide us with regard to the question we are bringing to God for God’s guidance.
Courage: Give control over to God. Pray from the bottom of your heart “God’s will be done.” To truly pray this takes courage as you surrender your will entirely to that of God’s.
Interior freedom: Pray for the freedom to follow God’s guidance. Be aware of two barriers to this freedom 1) All talk no action. Don’t just talk about it, do the foundational work needed to develop ears to hear God’s guidance. 2) Avoid putting conditions on God’s guidance. The truly free person is one whose whole and deepest desire is to do whatever God’s will is for them with no conditions attached.
Prayerful listening for God’s voice and your daily experience of God: a daily practice of quiet time in God’s presence, learning to hear and respond to God’s voice in our lives.
Having our priories straight: Having a foundational hunger and desire to hear God in our lives. Everything is filtered through this desire. “Delight in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart” Psalm 37:4
Not confusing ends with means: The end of our life’s discernment must be to follow Christ; everything else must be seen as a means to this end.
