Awakening: Wisdom: Part Two

Hi Everyone, I pray that you, at this very moment, are experiencing the presence of God in your day. Now is a good time to be still and let God speak to your heart.

Wisdom Part Two

Last week we began a series of thoughts and observations with regard to wisdom with an article titled “Wisdom and Epiphany. This week we continue with…

Right Thinking, Compassion and Wisdom

Being right is not synonymous with wisdom for wisdom cannot be expressed with judgmentalism, elitism, or condescension even when we have our facts straight. Wisdom expressed wisely changes things; it takes the teacher and the student, the speaker and the listener to deeper depths of spirit, soul, emotions, mind and body. Words of wisdom must be spoken wisely for true wisdom to be rendered. They cannot be merely right they must have life. Wisdom must transcend the mind and mere correctness. Wisdom must be correct in that it is Truth but to be truly wise it must intersect with compassion and Love. Wisdom at its highest point is a state of being, born of correctness that is subject to growth and learning and compassion that allows us to be with one another in our pain and suffering, as well as our joy and peace. Wisdom is therefore born out of an open experienced, rightly oriented mind and a humble compassionate heart. From wisdom flows Love that puts us in touch with our humanity, at a deep, even transcendent space. Wisdom often seems antithetical to reason, which is why it cannot be simply based on being correct. Jesus gives us a beautiful path for understanding the way of wisdom in Matthew 5:3-11, which may be the most profound words of wisdom ever spoken. This wisdom opens the door to Shalom, peace, harmony, bliss, rest, which are the fruit of all true wisdom teachings. Wisdom does not conquer and divide, creating winners and losers; wisdom receives, and assimilates, one for all and all for one; all equal at the highest level. Jesus prayed; “that they all, be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent me” John 17:21. This “Oneing” in perfect peace is the goal of all true wisdom, or more accurately, is wisdom itself. Let us see if we can follow Jesus’ words of wisdom so as to allow them to speak true wisdom in our lives. The following is a brief outline of “A Study in Wisdom” that will be taught at The Awakening Institute in September 2017.

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. NRS Matthew 5:3

Our human spirits are poor until they are touched by the Holy Spirit. Blessed are those who realize this. This is the beginning of wisdom. (See also Prov. 9:10)

Knowing Oneself

"Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. NRS Matthew 5:4

Wisdom progresses as we come to know ourselves as lost and incapable of finding our way home. To mourn our human condition is to invite the comfort of God into our lives.

"Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. NRS Matthew 5:5

The meek, are not subject to the worlds manipulation nor does the world offer anything they must have to be happy. E. Stanley Jones called these “The Terrible Meek” because they seek only God and cannot be tempted by the world. They have become detached from anything that might take their attention from God. This is wisdom seeking the source of all wisdom.

Being Right Before God

"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. NRS Matthew 5:6

Righteousness is a state of grace before God who by grace makes us righteous as a result of being in relationship with God, thus making us able to live a life that is pleasing to God. However, true wisdom is not based on rightness alone, true wisdom is not based on our conception of righteousness as something that gives us the right to call down judgement or impose what we conceive as right positions on other people with a heavy hand. Righteousness must be tempered by mercy, compassion.

"Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. NRS Matthew 5:7

Wisdom is Truth derived from a relationship with God offered with mercy and compassion to others.

"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. NRS Matthew 5:8

Righteousness presented with compassion opens the heart to the gift to know and to follow the will of God, as we practice a deepening awareness of God’s presence in our lives.

"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. NRS Matthew 5:9

Wisdom’s ultimate goal is peace and good will to all people. This is the focus and direction for all who seek true wisdom in their lives. At this point our humanity takes on holiness that defines our journey and epitomizes God’s wisdom.

Steadfast Resolve

"Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 "Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. NRS Matthew 5:10-11

True wisdom includes a willingness to be steadfast even in the face of in suffering without complaint or retaliation. This pain is not meant to prove a point, but to live the wisdom of God, which is a state of awareness before God, with God and in God that edifies and brings about sacred space in which peace dwells for all people. This is a peace that is with us, even when we suffer, which is a gift of the wisdom we seek. Wisdom also involves a willingness to experience life, which will inevitably include suffering. Wisdom tells us that God is with us through the good times and the bad.

Humanity: shalom, steadfast devotion to God and to experiencing life to the fullest

A Gathering of Spiritual Directors

This coming spring The Awakening Institute will host a gathering of spiritual directors. The reason for the gathering is to come together in prayer and to seek discernment regarding ways we can, together, raise awareness within the church of how spiritual direction can be a vehicle by which God’s presence and voice can be more deeply felt and more clearly heard, at both individual and congregational levels. If you are a spiritual director and would like to join in this conversation please contact Gene Yotka at 321-298-8801 or email for additional details.

May you experience God’s loving and guiding presence throughout the New Year.
