Awakening: Wisdom Part Three1

A Weekly publication of The Awakening Institute for Spiritual Formation, Spiritual Direction and Soul Care

Hi Everyone, I pray that you, at this very moment, are experiencing the presence of God in your day. Now is a good time to be still and let God speak to your heart.

Wisdom Part Three1

Two weeks ago we began a series of thoughts and observations with regard to wisdom; first with an article titled “Wisdom and Epiphany” and second with some thoughts on “Right Thinking, Compassion and Wisdom”. This week we continue with…

Wisdom, an Experience of God

In New Testament Greek word translated wisdom is Sophia is defined as being comprised of skillful use of broad knowledge in many diverse ways. Jesus’ wisdom was widely recognized. Those who heard him speak in parables with great eloquence about profound heavenly truth using simple everyday situations were moved deeply. Jesus touched their hearts by explaining the unexplainable. Jesus took the unknowable mysteries of heaven and made them knowable. In his word’s there is something more than what the human mind can grasp in the form of information, or that could be understood intellectually. Somehow, Jesus spoke and still speaks in such a manner that one’s heart is stirred toward a transcendent understanding that is far less informational and far more transformational. But hear we must truly listen. You could say, rather than hearing the words, or often in our case reading the words of Jesus as objects to be grasped and codified they are instead meant to be received and experienced. After speaking several wise parables Jesus returned to his hometown where those who knew him best were astounded by what they heard, asking one another.

"Where did this man get this wisdom and these deeds of power? NRS Matthew 13:54b

Two questions

1. Where did Jesus get this wisdom?

2. Can we participate in wisdom as well?

Where did Jesus get his wisdom? We know he did not get it in school. It was not taught to him in the conventional manner. The wisdom that Jesus displayed was not a belief drawn from human doctrine, but a deep knowing born of the reality that he was drawing from an inner relationship that was empowered by the breath of God.

For wisdom is more mobile than any motion; because of her pureness she pervades and penetrates all things. For she is a breath of the power of God, and a pure emanation of the glory of the Almighty; therefore nothing defiled gains entrance to her. For she is a reflection of eternal light, a spotless mirror of the working of God, and an image of his goodness.

The Wisdom of Solomon, 7:24-26

from the Apocrypha, RSV translation

Jesus did not have wisdom based on correct doctrinal statements. Jesus did not relate to the Father by knowing right things about the first person of the Trinity.2 Jesus knows the Father intimately and the wisdom with which he speaks flows out of this intimate relationship. This is important for us today, if we ever hope to live in accordance with God’s wisdom we must cultivate, by being open to wisdom as the breath of God calling us into an ever deepening relationship with God (Father, Son and Holy Spirit). In turn we allow God’s wisdom to penetrate who we are at every level. We do this by embracing what we can know intellectually along with receiving the vast unknowable mystery of God, which by God’s grace becomes experienced at the soul level.

“Wisdom is the art of living in rhythm with your soul, your life, and the divine.”

John O’Donohue, Anam Cara, 194

Our participation in wisdom thus becomes less about us participating with wisdom on a didactic level and more about wisdom participating with us on an experiential level.

Next week “Becoming Open to God’s Wisdom”

1 Excerpted from The Awakening Institutes Seminar on Christian Wisdom.

2 I am not saying that knowing things about God and having doctrinal understanding of who God is and how God moves in the world is a bad thing. I am just saying that these in and of themselves will not produce wisdom.

A Gathering of Spiritual Directors

This coming spring The Awakening Institute will host a gathering of spiritual directors. The reason for the gathering is to come together in prayer and to seek discernment regarding ways we can, together, raise awareness within the church of how spiritual direction can be a vehicle by which God’s presence and voice can be more deeply felt and more clearly heard, at both individual and congregational levels. If you are a spiritual director and would like to join in this conversation please contact Gene Yotka at 321-298-8801 or email for additional details.
