Awakening: Preparing for Lent Part Two

February 27, 2017

A Weekly publication of The Awakening Institute for Spiritual Formation, Spiritual Direction and Soul Care

Hi Everyone, I pray that you, at this very moment, are experiencing the presence of God in your day. Now is a good time to be still and let God speak to your heart.

Preparing for Lent (Part Two)*

This week we continue to prepare for the upcoming 40 days of Lent, which begin next Wednesday. We continue with the theme of healing that we began in last week’s Awakening when we pondered the healing of the blind man as given to us in Mark 8:22-26. This week we will consider two healing events which occur within the context of a single narrative. These are the healing of the hemorrhaging woman and the apparent lifting of Jairus’ daughter from the jaws of death as given to us in Luke 8:42-56.

1. Read Luke 8:42-56two times slowly

2. Read Luke 8:42-56 again. This time place yourself into the scene. Live it, feel it, taste it, and smell it. Take in the experience as it unfolds around you. Be aware of your thoughts and emotions. Ask the Lord to reveal any blind spots, or special learning that you may need to have revealed to you at this time.

3. Sit for five minutes in silence

4. Write in your journal a few sentences indicating important aspects of your experience. Go into as much detail as you can. Also write a bit about blind spots, or teaching, that may have occurred as a result of the experience.

My Response to this Experience:

As I experience this scene I can feel and see Jairus’ desperation. Out of the corner of my eye, as I stand among a large crowd, I see a woman; somehow know she is the hemorrhaging woman in Scripture. I then see her coyly coming closer to Jesus. As she slowly walks by him she gently takes hold of the fringe of his garment and then quickly lets it go. Jesus, with a smile, begins to ask who touched him. It was as if the woman’s brief touch had touched the Lord’s heart. He looks pleased and wants to know who touched him. Now I have become Peter asking Jesus what he meant as many were pressing in on him. Then I became myself asking myself, “Why did I say that?” As I look into the Lord’s eyes, as Peter or myself I do not know, I can see something important has occurred. The woman, who did not go far, came to Jesus, fell on her face, saying it was “I who touched you and I am healed.” The Lord’s compassion was palpable. The woman’s eyes were filled with wonder and gratitude. Then I see Jairus getting a bit fidgety. The disciples seem to be going about their business. A man brings bad news to Jairus, he begins to sink to the ground, but Jesus grabs his arm telling him “Do not be afraid, believe that she will be ok.” I saw hope come back to Jairus’ face. As we walked to Jairus’ home I said to Jesus, “Lord, I want to be as loving and compassionate as you are.” He said to me, “You will, just keep watching, keep following and believe it is so.” When we arrived at Jairus’ house people were crying with grief. Again I see Jarius’ countenance sink. Jesus with a glance indicated to him, do not worry, again hope returned. After encountering a few mockers, who disparaged Jesus’ statement that the girl was not dead, we entered the house. I think I am still Peter. Along with Jarius and his wife, Jesus, James, John and myself we enter the house. Without wasting a moment Jesus walked over to the girl and said “child arise.” Color returned to her face, she smiled, and Jesus said, “get her something to eat.” I, along with the others stood there in awe, praising God. Joy filled the room. I feel honored to have witnessed this miracle. I then turned to Jesus saying “All I want is to be your disciple, your friend, your servant. He said to me “you are and you will be.” Then after a brief pause Jesus looked into my eyes and said, “Just follow me, follow me into a great adventure.” In a flash I am in the present, Jesus is still with me, now walking and gesturing with his hand for me to come. I hear him say, in a soft but authoritative voice, “The world has seen nothing yet, as I am about to do a new thing. “My mind thinks “revival” but not as any past revival, but a new thing!

Something to Ponder

Perhaps we act out of fear.

The what-ifs bully us into doing less than our best.

The if-onlys freeze us into regret, and steal the energy

we need to move on.

A Gathering of Spiritual Directors

This coming spring The Awakening Institute will host a gathering of spiritual directors. The reason for the gathering is to come together in prayer and to seek discernment regarding ways we can, together, raise awareness within the church of how spiritual direction can be a vehicle by which God’s presence and voice can be more deeply felt and more clearly heard, at both individual and congregational levels. If you are a spiritual director and would like to join in this conversation please contact Gene Yotka at 321-298-8801 or email theawakeninginstitute@gmail.com for additional details.
