(Day Thirty-three) Daily Lenten Devotional

April 7, 2017

Friday, April 7th (Day Thirty-three)

Dear Lord, I pray that I may know your love for me in a deeper way as I ponder your willingness to suffer on my behalf.

The Washing of the Feet, John 13:1-17

1. Come into God’s (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) loving presence. Feel God’s loving gaze. Offer yourself completely to God.

2. Silently sit before God for 10 minutes.

3. Read John 13:1-17 five times very slowly. The first time, simply and reverently read it, allowing God’s word to flow over you. The second time be aware of any verse word, phrase or concept that God is revealing to you as you read. Meditate silently for several minutes what the Lord has given you. During the third reading allow a prayer to formulate in your heart and offer that prayer to God. As the Scripture is read a fourth time, allow yourself to be drawn into the biblical scene as if you are living it right now. Be aware of any physical sensations, thoughts, or emotions that may arise. Journal your experience in detail. The fifth and final reading should be a reading of unknowing. Simply rest in the mystery of God’s presence and God’s Word, peacefully and with great joy.

4. Journal important aspects of the entire experience.

Read the following. You may use it as a guide or just food for thought:

Jesus’ hour has come, all things are in his hands, he had come from God who is Love; he was going back to God who is Love. Jesus is love therefore he loved his own to the very end. Love came to serve and Love came to lead. As I watch Jesus, I watch Love, with a deep desire to teach us how to love and how to be his followers. Some, like Peter, would have Love act in the way he thought Love should act. As if Peter is saying, either don’t love me at all, or love me in accordance to my thoughts on what I think love should be and love should do. Love loves as love does nothing more and nothing less. Love will not be denied nor will it be coerced. Jesus, Love has come to us. Love showing us who God is, was determined yet compassionate. I am reclining at the table. Jesus has just finished his interaction with Peter and I am next. My sandals are already off in anticipation. Jesus pours water over my feet, he rubs the tops of my feet gently, toes a bit harder and my soles he scrubs hard. Jesus does not speak a word but I feel clean as never before, inside and out. This feeling of being clean makes me want to serve others, not because I am clean but because of the One who made me clean. I imagine myself cleaning the feet of everyone in my family. I serve many, but right now, all I can think about is serving my family
