(Day Thirty-five) Daily Lenten Devotional

April 10, 2017

“Our Walk to the Cross”

A Lenten Devotional

(Days 35-40)

This week is all about becoming present to the healing presence of Jesus Christ. This week we pray that we may commit ourselves fully, by the power of God, to follow Jesus these final days, to know experientially the blessing of Christ’s passion, death and resurrection, that we may be drawn into a full awareness of God’s presence and God’s Love for us.

Monday April 10th (Day Thirty-five)

Lord, I pray for the courage to follow you and deeply experience your passion, death and resurrection this week. Lord, help me to become more fully aware of Your presence and Your Love for me, for all people and all creation, this Holy week. In Christ’s precious name I pray. Amen.

Jesus Arrested and Before the Sanhedrin: Mark 14:43-65; Matthew 26:47-68; Luke 22:47-53

1. Come into God’s (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) loving presence. Feel God’s loving, healing gaze come over you. Offer yourself completely to God.

2. Silently sit before God for 10 minutes.

3. Read Mark 14:66-72 or Matthew 26:69-75 or Luke 22:54-62 five times very slowly. The first time, simply and reverently read it, allowing God’s word to flow over you. The second time be aware of any verse word, phrase or concept that God is revealing to you as you read. Meditate silently for several minutes what the Lord has given you. During the third reading allow a prayer to formulate in your heart and offer that prayer to God. As the Scripture is read a fourth time, allow yourself to be drawn into the biblical scene as if you are living it right now. Be aware of any physical sensations, thoughts, or emotions that may arise. Journal your experience in detail.

The fifth and final reading should be a reading of unknowing. Simply rest in the mystery of God’s presence and God’s Word, peacefully and with great joy.

4. Journal important aspects of the entire experience.

Read the following. You may use it as a guide or just food for thought:

I watch Jesus who is both determined to carry out his mission and perplexed at the timing of the arrest. Peter strikes the ear of the priests slave. Jesus looks annoyed. Judas approaches, Jesus looks at Judas with sadness and disappointment. Determination, compassion, and disappointment are what I see as I look at Jesus. Now Jesus is being taken away. I am standing still. I become aware of Peter following Jesus at a safe distance. I begin to follow him. He walks slowly with his head down, occasionally looking around. I catch myself doing the very same thing. We walk for quite a while. Then, suddenly I am in the house of the high priest. There is a lot of commotion, as the chief priest, with disdain in his voice asks Jesus, “Are you the Christ.” All I hear Jesus say is, “I Am.” Those present go crazy. I see murder and hate, mixed with fear in their eyes. I want to rescue Jesus. Then, as if he read my mind, he looked at over at me, peering into my eyes, and then smiling; I hear in my heart, “Be still and know that I am God.” Then they descend on him, mocking him, spitting on him; I turn away. I then quickly turn back. Jesus is not resisting, which seems to anger them further. But, they stop hitting him. I stayed still and God stayed still. I feel a bit sick to my stomach.
