Day Thirty-seven; (Part Two

Evening)

The Death of Jesus, Mark 15:33-41; Matthew 27:45-56; Luke 23:33-49; John 19:28-30

1. Come into God’s (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) loving presence. Feel God’s loving, healing gaze come over you. Offer yourself completely to God.

2. Silently sit before God for 10 minutes.

3. Read Mark 15:33-41 or Matthew 27:45-56 or Luke 23:33-49or John 19:28-30 five times very slowly. The first time, simply and reverently read it, allowing God’s word to flow over you. The second time be aware of any verse word, phrase or concept that God is revealing to you as you read. Meditate silently for several minutes what the Lord has given you. During the third reading allow a prayer to formulate in your heart and offer that prayer to God. As the Scripture is read a fourth time, allow yourself to be drawn into the biblical scene as if you are living it right now. Be aware of any physical sensations, thoughts, or emotions that may arise. Journal your experience in detail. The fifth and final reading should be a reading of unknowing. Simply rest in the mystery of God’s presence and God’s Word, peacefully and with great joy.

4. Journal important aspects of the entire experience.

Read the following. You may use it as a guide or just food for thought:

I have now stood up after sitting at the base of the cross for a while. I see a lot of people. Some are gawkers, some are continuing to mock Jesus. Some are distraught, but most seem to be just going about their jobs or minding their own business. I think to myself, “Where are all those who witnessed the miracles. Where are those who Jesus healed? Where is Lazarus? Where are the disciples?” I cynically think, “Nobody cares”; because if they did they would be storming the cross and rescuing Jesus.” The injustice seems immense. I am watching Jesus. His breathing has become very shallow, followed by a final breath, not a gasp, just a breath and the words “It is finished.” His body is lifeless, but I hear or feel something like a mystical, transcendent breath, as if Jesus breathed his last in human corruptible form only to be followed by a breath in heaven in an incorruptible state. Then I hear a centurion and others who must have been sensing something as well saying “surely this man was the Son of God.” I feel frustrated at the tardiness of their revelation. I am now standing with the women looking at the scene from a distance. They are cried out; physically and emotionally exhausted; numb. I feel the same. I hear the words “it is finished” but I know there is still more, much more to come.
